It's Great to be in Jamaica Mon!
We’re in Jamaica Mon! We had traditional Jamaican food for lunch. Tastees is sort of the McDonald’s of Jamaica. Despite being somewhat spicy, everyone loved it! We got busy right away after arriving in Kingston. After checking into the Shirley Retreat Hotel and cleaning up a bit (several students and leaders took showers), we joined our Jamaican brothers and sisters at Gardener’s View Baptist Church for a praise and worship celebration. Our team was introduced to the group and I got an opportunity to share a brief message of encouragement with those present.
After joining in worship with our friends at Gardener’s View, Hannah, Caleb and Chelsea led worship with several songs. We brought along with us a portable sound system. Aaron is responsible for set-up and breakdown of the system.
Later, back at the hotel, the team had a time of sharing and planning for the week ahead. Everyone has been given a personal devotion guide that picks up where the pre-project guide leaves off. Students are being encouraged to have a time of personal devotion and prayer each day.
Before heading out Saturday, our group had the opportunity to meet and pray with a group of high school track athletes in Kingston for the national track and field competition. We presented each of them with an On Mission to Share Jesus Now bracelets that we are using during the week as we witness. When asked, most of the athletes said they were Christians, so we asked them to use the bracelets as they have the opportunity to witness during their sporting events. Today, we are leaving a music workshop (piano, guitar, bass and drums) at Gardener’s View. Also, Lonette and several of the girls on the trip – Jessi, Evea, Laura, Caitlin and others – made balloon animals and balloon hats for the kids.
Also during the morning, Jordan, Bradley, William, and Tommy played football (American soccer) with a group of boys and girls on a sports field close to the church. Our group is going to play a pick-up soccer game with local teenagers this afternoon. There will be a time of witnessing and sharing during a break in the game.
Prior to the soccer game, our team will be assisting the church hand out water bottles and tracts at the national track and field matches being held in Kingston.
I’ll send as many updates as a can this week. I’m having to use an Internet café and only have limited access. Thanks again for your prayers during our initial delay. We covet your prayers the remainder of the week.
